What this sheet revises
Each question comes from one of the lessons below. If a question is tricky, look back at that lesson’s sheet and slides.
| Relative clauses | Relative pronouns (who, whom, whose, which, that, where, when), relative clauses, commas, and leaving the pronoun out. |
|---|---|
| Expanded noun phrases | Noun phrases that give extra detail with adjectives, prepositional phrases and relative clauses. |
| Main and subordinate clauses | Telling main clauses from subordinate clauses, and simple, compound and complex sentences. |
| Coordinating and subordinating conjunctions | And, but, or, so and the subordinating conjunctions that start a subordinate clause. |
| Adverbs of possibility | Perhaps, probably, certainly and other adverbs that show how certain something is. |
| Modal verbs | Can, could, may, might, will, would, shall, should, must and ought: ability, permission, advice and degrees of possibility. |

What is on the worksheet
Every sheet for this lesson has a short teaching box and 12 questions that get gradually harder: 8 fluency questions, then 4 reasoning questions that ask pupils to explain or choose. A writing challenge follows. The questions use the same styles as the key stage 2 grammar and punctuation test (circle, underline, tick, fill the gap, add punctuation, rewrite, explain). They are written for this website, not copied from past papers.
All the answers are on the last page of the same editable Word file. New questions are made every time, so you can print a different sheet for every group or for homework. The same sheet code always gives the same sheet.
Writing challenge: Choose the lesson from this sheet that you found most difficult. Write three new questions of your own for a friend, with an answer sheet, then swap and mark each other’s work.
Pupil target: I can remember what I have learned and use it.
The PowerPoint
A 20-slide lesson deck for the same lesson: a starter that revisits earlier learning, key words, an I do and a You do question on each slide with a countdown timer, answers that appear one click at a time, and a challenge. Download the revision: relative clauses, phrases and clauses PowerPoint.
