Help with maths at home

Short, clear worksheets with answers that you can print at home. No log-in and no cost.

How to use the worksheets

  1. Choose your child's year group and find the term and topic they are working on at school. If you are not sure, ask their teacher which topic is next.
  2. Start with the Expected sheet. If it feels too easy, move up to Greater depth. If your child is finding it hard, try Developing first.
  3. Keep it short. Ten to fifteen minutes is plenty. Stop when your child is getting tired.
  4. Ask them to explain. “How did you work that out?” helps more than telling them the method.
  5. Mark together. Every sheet has a separate answer sheet. Look for patterns in the mistakes, such as forgetting a carried digit, and practise that part.

Many steps are a single sheet that starts easy and gets harder, with the answers in red on the last pages. For those, simply start at question 1 and stop when it gets tricky. Older steps have three levels, described next.

Which level should my child try?

  • Developing: smaller numbers and more support. A good place to rebuild confidence.
  • Expected: the main sheet for most children in the year group.
  • Greater depth: larger numbers and more reasoning, for children who find the main sheet easy.

Common questions

Are the methods the same as school?

The sheets use the standard written methods taught in English primary schools, such as column addition, long multiplication and the bus-stop method for short division. Schools sometimes use slightly different layouts, so check with the teacher if your child uses a different one.

Can I change a sheet?

Yes. The files are Word documents. You can open them in Word, Google Docs or Pages and change numbers or delete questions.

My child got a question wrong. What now?

Look at the answer sheet together, then try a similar question. Making a mistake and fixing it is a normal part of learning maths.
