What this sheet revises

Each question comes from one of the lessons below. If a question is tricky, look back at that lesson’s sheet and slides.

Keeping the tense the sameSpotting and fixing a verb that changes tense by mistake.
Was and were in Standard EnglishChoosing was or were so that the verb agrees with its subject.
Recognising the subjunctiveThe subjunctive form: if I were, I wish it were and it is vital that he be.
Using the passiveChanging sentences from active to passive and back, and leaving out the agent.
Formal and informal writingTelling formal language from informal language, and choosing the right one for the reader.
Formal vocabularyChoosing formal words instead of everyday ones: get → obtain, help → assist.
Standard EnglishSpotting and fixing non-standard grammar such as I done it, them books and double negatives.
Question tagsShort questions added to the end of a statement: It’s cold, isn’t it?

What is on the worksheet

Every sheet for this lesson has a short teaching box and 12 questions that get gradually harder: 8 fluency questions, then 4 reasoning questions that ask pupils to explain or choose. A writing challenge follows. The questions use the same styles as the key stage 2 grammar and punctuation test (circle, underline, tick, fill the gap, add punctuation, rewrite, explain). They are written for this website, not copied from past papers.

All the answers are on the last page of the same editable Word file. New questions are made every time, so you can print a different sheet for every group or for homework. The same sheet code always gives the same sheet.

Writing challenge: Choose the lesson from this sheet that you found most difficult. Write three new questions of your own for a friend, with an answer sheet, then swap and mark each other’s work.

Pupil target: I can remember what I have learned and use it.

The PowerPoint

A 20-slide lesson deck for the same lesson: a starter that revisits earlier learning, key words, an I do and a You do question on each slide with a countdown timer, answers that appear one click at a time, and a challenge. Download the revision: verbs, Standard English and formal writing PowerPoint.
