Boba Pals: a free live maths quiz for your class
Boba Pals turns a maths lesson into a class-wide quiz. Pupils join on their own tablets, Chromebooks or phones with a short code, answer questions from the same steps as the worksheets, open chests, hatch pets and climb a leaderboard. There are no accounts and no email, and nothing to install.

Boba Pals is new. If something does not work, or you would like it to do something else, email [email protected].
How a lesson works
- Choose topics. Pick any blocks from Years 4, 5 and 6, the length of the quiz (5 to 20 minutes) and whether answers are multiple choice or typed. Year 3 will appear when its worksheets are written.
- Show the code. Pupils go to the address on your screen and type the five-character code.
- Pupils play. They pick an easy, medium or hard chest, answer a question, then tap the chest to open it for coins. Coins buy eggs, eggs hatch pets, and pets make every later chest pay more. Pupils can also battle a wild pet or, if you allow it, a classmate.
- See the results. A podium, every pupil's score and accuracy, and the topics your class found hardest, with a CSV to keep.
The questions
Every question is made by the same code that makes the worksheets, so the answer always matches the question. 370 steps across Years 4, 5 and 6 are ready. Pupils get new numbers every time, and different pupils get different questions.
Designed for classrooms
- No accounts or email. Nicknames are made for pupils. You can let them type a first name if you prefer.
- No chat, no adverts, no tracking. Pupils cannot message each other. Nothing about a pupil is shared.
- Gentle on wrong answers, hard on guessing. A wrong answer costs a few coins and a short pause, and a run of wrong answers lowers what the next right answer earns, so clicking at random does not win. You can switch the coin penalty off.
- You stay in charge. You start and end the quiz, can remove a pupil, and can turn battles between pupils off.
Will it work on our school network?
Boba Pals needs ordinary HTTPS and WebSocket connections to bobaeducation.com and nothing else: no other websites, no cookies and no downloads from third parties. Some school filters block unfamiliar sites, or WebSockets, which carry the live leaderboard. Open the connection check on a school device before your lesson. It takes a few seconds, tells you in plain words if anything is blocked, and gives you a message to send your IT team.
Questions
Is Boba Pals free?
Yes. There is nothing to buy and no account to make, for teachers or pupils.
How many pupils can join one quiz?
Up to 80 in one room.
What devices does it need?
Any tablet, Chromebook, laptop or phone with an up-to-date browser (Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari 14 or later). Nothing to install.
Does it keep my pupils' names?
Pupils get a made-up nickname such as Brave Otter, or you can let them type a first name. The quiz room is deleted automatically about 24 hours after it ends. There are no accounts and no chat. See the privacy page for the detail.
Can pupils just click answers at random?
It does not pay. A wrong answer costs a few coins and a short pause, and the more of a pupil's last answers are wrong the fewer coins each right answer earns. Yes or no questions pay less because they are easier to guess.
Will it work on our school network?
It needs ordinary HTTPS and WebSocket connections to bobaeducation.com and nothing else. Some school filters block unfamiliar sites or WebSockets, so run the connection check on a school device first. If something is blocked it says what to ask your IT team to allow.
Is it for homework?
Not yet. It is a live quiz for a lesson, with the teacher starting and ending it.
More about the data the quiz handles is in the privacy page.
