What this sheet revises
Each question comes from one of the lessons below. If a question is tricky, look back at that lesson’s sheet and slides.
| Colons and semi-colons | A first look at colons before a list or explanation and semi-colons between related clauses. |
|---|---|
| Colons | A colon before a list and before an explanation. |
| Semi-colons | Joining related clauses with a semi-colon, and separating complex list items. |
| Punctuating bullet points | Colons before a bullet list, and capital letters and full stops in the list. |
| Writing in note form | Turning sentences into short notes that keep the important facts. |
| Choosing punctuation to mark boundaries | Choosing between a comma, colon, semi-colon and full stop to mark where parts of a sentence meet. |

What is on the worksheet
Every sheet for this lesson has a short teaching box and 12 questions that get gradually harder: 8 fluency questions, then 4 reasoning questions that ask pupils to explain or choose. A writing challenge follows. The questions use the same styles as the key stage 2 grammar and punctuation test (circle, underline, tick, fill the gap, add punctuation, rewrite, explain). They are written for this website, not copied from past papers.
All the answers are on the last page of the same editable Word file. New questions are made every time, so you can print a different sheet for every group or for homework. The same sheet code always gives the same sheet.
Writing challenge: Choose the lesson from this sheet that you found most difficult. Write three new questions of your own for a friend, with an answer sheet, then swap and mark each other’s work.
Pupil target: I can remember what I have learned and use it.
The PowerPoint
A 20-slide lesson deck for the same lesson: a starter that revisits earlier learning, key words, an I do and a You do question on each slide with a countdown timer, answers that appear one click at a time, and a challenge. Download the revision: colons, semi-colons, lists and notes PowerPoint.
