Year 6 Miles and kilometres worksheets

Convert between miles and kilometres using an approximate rule. Two free editable Word sheets with the same questions: one scaffolded, one not. The answers follow the questions in each file: the same sheet again with every answer in red.

Download the worksheets

Both sheets have exactly the same questions, so the whole class can be taught together. Print on A4 portrait: every page carries the sheet twice, side by side, so you can cut down the middle and two pupils each get a half to stick in their books. Every question sits in its own box and pupils write their answers in their book. The answers follow the questions in each file: the same sheet again with every answer in red. Both open in Word, Google Docs, Pages and LibreOffice, so you can change numbers, delete questions or add your own.

Scaffolded sheet

First page of the scaffolded Miles and kilometres sheet, printed twice side by side

Key words highlighted, a hint under each question, and help charts or number lines. For pupils who are working towards the expected standard.

Answer in your book (.docx)

Not scaffolded sheet

First page of the not scaffolded Miles and kilometres sheet, printed twice side by side

The same questions without the extra support. For pupils working at the expected standard: eight fluency questions first, then the reasoning questions.

Answer in your book (.docx)

Sample questions from this step

These are real questions from the first set of the sheet (two from the fluency page, two from the reasoning page). Open each one to see the answer.

  1. Two of these statements are true. Use the bar model to help you.
    1 mile1 mile1 mile1 mile1 mile1 km1 km1 km1 km1 km1 km1 km1 km
A: 5 miles is shorter than 5 kilometres
B: 1 mile is longer than 1 kilometre
C: 2 miles is shorter than 2 kilometres
D: 1 mile is shorter than 5 kilometres
Write the letters of the two true statements.
    ____
    Show the answer

    B, D

  2. Use 5 miles ≈ 8 km to complete the conversions.
    a) ____ miles ≈ 8 km
    b) ____ miles ≈ 16 km
    c) ____ miles ≈ 24 km
    Show the answer

    5; 10; 15

  3. Tia knows that 5 miles ≈ 8 km. Tia works out 15 miles like this:
    5 miles ≈ 8 km
    +10 miles ≈ +10 km
    15 miles ≈ 18 km
Tia has made a mistake. Explain the mistake, then write the correct answer.
    Correct answer: ____ km
    Show the answer

Tia added 10 km instead of multiplying. 15 miles is 3 times as far as 5 miles, so it is 3 × 8 = 24 km.; 24

  4. Tia ran a total of 38 km in 7 days. Amir ran a total of 20 miles in 5 days. Remember: 5 miles ≈ 8 km, so 1 mile ≈ 1.6 km.
Who ran further? About how many kilometres further?
    ____
    ____ km
    Show the answer

    Tia; 6

Facts used on these sheets

  • 5 miles ≈ 8 km (about)

What is on each sheet

  • Fluency: eight questions that start easy and get harder, with the key skill of the step practised in different ways.
  • Reasoning: questions with pictures, tables and number lines (spot the mistake, true or false and explain, puzzles with one answer, an open-ended task).
  • Answers in the same file: the sheet again with every answer in red, so there is only one file to download.
  • Boba characters give the instructions in speech bubbles. They are decoration only.
