Year 6 Metric units worksheets

Know metric units and choose sensible ones to measure with. Two free editable Word sheets with the same questions: one scaffolded, one not. The answers follow the questions in each file: the same sheet again with every answer in red.

Download the worksheets

Both sheets have exactly the same questions, so the whole class can be taught together. Print on A4 portrait: every page carries the sheet twice, side by side, so you can cut down the middle and two pupils each get a half to stick in their books. Every question sits in its own box and pupils write their answers in their book. The answers follow the questions in each file: the same sheet again with every answer in red. Both open in Word, Google Docs, Pages and LibreOffice, so you can change numbers, delete questions or add your own.

Scaffolded sheet

First page of the scaffolded Metric units sheet, printed twice side by side

Key words highlighted, a hint under each question, and help charts or number lines. For pupils who are working towards the expected standard.

Answer in your book (.docx)

Not scaffolded sheet

First page of the not scaffolded Metric units sheet, printed twice side by side

The same questions without the extra support. For pupils working at the expected standard: eight fluency questions first, then the reasoning questions.

Sample questions from this step

These are real questions from the first set of the sheet (two from the fluency page, two from the reasoning page). Open each one to see the answer.

  1. Sort these units into the correct group: g, km, litre, tonne, m, ml.
    Length: ____
    Mass: ____
    Capacity: ____
    Show the answer

km, m; g, tonne; litre, ml

  2. Which is the best estimate? Write it down.
    a) the length of a door: 2 m, 2 cm, 2 mm, 2 km ____
    b) the mass of an apple: 150 tonnes, 150 g, 150 kg, 1,500 g ____
    c) the length of a road between two towns: 25 km, 25 m, 25 cm, 25 mm ____
    Show the answer

    2 m; 150 g; 25 km

  3. A lorry has a mass of 4 tonnes.
Eva says: “It is impossible to write the mass in grams.”
Is Eva correct? Circle yes or no.
    Circle yes or no.
Explain. Convert the measurement to prove it.
    Show the answer

No; No. 4 tonnes = 4,000,000 g. It is possible, but the number is very big.

  4. A bath holds 60 litres of water. Rosie fills it with a 5 ml teaspoon. Zach fills it with a 1 litre jug.
How many times does each of them have to fill their container?
    Teaspoons: ____
    Jugs: ____
Whose method is quicker? Explain why.
    Show the answer

12,000; 60; Zach’s method is quicker. The jug is much bigger than a teaspoon, so there are far fewer scoops to count.

What is on each sheet

  • Fluency: eight questions that start easy and get harder, with the key skill of the step practised in different ways.
  • Reasoning: questions with pictures, tables and number lines (spot the mistake, true or false and explain, puzzles with one answer, an open-ended task).
  • Answers in the same file: the sheet again with every answer in red, so there is only one file to download.
  • Boba characters give the instructions in speech bubbles. They are decoration only.
