Year 6 · SPaG · Autumn: Word classes
Year 6 pronouns worksheet and PowerPoint
To identify personal pronouns, possessive pronouns and possessive determiners, and to choose the right pronoun for a noun.
Pronouns
A pronoun takes the place of a noun so we do not have to repeat it. The pronoun you choose must match the noun: its number (one or many), its gender (he, she, it) and its job (subject or object).
| personal pronoun | I, you, he, she, it, we, they (subject) and me, you, him, her, it, us, them (object) |
|---|---|
| possessive pronoun | stands on its own and shows who owns something: mine, yours, his, hers, ours, theirs |
| possessive determiner | comes before a noun: my, your, his, her, its, our, their coat |
Examples
- She gave him a book.
- That coat is mine, but my scarf is yours.

What is on the worksheet
Every sheet for this lesson has a short teaching box and 12 questions that get gradually harder: 8 fluency questions, then 4 reasoning questions that ask pupils to explain or choose. A writing challenge follows. The questions use the same styles as the key stage 2 grammar and punctuation test (circle, underline, tick, fill the gap, add punctuation, rewrite, explain). They are written for this website, not copied from past papers.
All the answers are on the last page of the same editable Word file. New questions are made every time, so you can print a different sheet for every group or for homework. The same sheet code always gives the same sheet.
Writing challenge: Rewrite a paragraph from a story you know, replacing every repeated noun with a pronoun. Check that the pronoun always matches the noun it replaces.
Pupil target: I can find pronouns and choose the right one.
The PowerPoint
A 20-slide lesson deck for the same lesson: a starter that revisits earlier learning, key words, an I do and a You do question on each slide with a countdown timer, answers that appear one click at a time, and a challenge. Download the pronouns PowerPoint.
