When a short division does not come out exactly, there is a remainder. In arithmetic questions it is usually written as a fraction: the remainder over the divisor, in its simplest form.
Example 1
A remainder that simplifies
5,379 ÷ 6
Set out the bus stop with 6 outside and 5,379 inside. Divide one digit at a time, starting on the left.
8
9
6
6
5
53
57
39
5 ÷ 6 = 0, remainder 5. Carry 5 to the next digit.
5 carried over with 3 makes 53. 53 ÷ 6 = 8, remainder 5. Carry 5 to the next digit.
5 carried over with 7 makes 57. 57 ÷ 6 = 9, remainder 3. Carry 3 to the next digit.
3 carried over with 9 makes 39. 39 ÷ 6 = 6, remainder 3.
3 is left over. A remainder of 3 out of 6 makes the fraction 3⁄6. Simplify it by dividing the top and bottom by 3: 1⁄2.
