Skill 6A: Short division with no remainders
Use the bus stop method to divide 4-digit numbers by a single digit exactly.
Worked examples
Short division (the bus stop method) is for dividing by a single digit. Divide one digit at a time and carry any remainder to the next digit.
Example 1
Dividing a 4-digit number by 6
5,376 ÷ 6
Set out the bus stop with 6 outside and 5,376 inside. Divide one digit at a time, starting on the left.
5 ÷ 6 = 0, remainder 5. Carry 5 to the next digit. 5 carried over with 3 makes 53. 53 ÷ 6 = 8, remainder 5. Carry 5 to the next digit. 5 carried over with 7 makes 57. 57 ÷ 6 = 9, remainder 3. Carry 3 to the next digit. 3 carried over with 6 makes 36. 36 ÷ 6 = 6.
There is nothing left over, so 5,376 ÷ 6 = 896. Check by multiplying: 896 × 6 = 5,376.
Answer: 896
Example 2
A zero in the answer
4,872 ÷ 8
Set out the bus stop with 8 outside and 4,872 inside. Divide one digit at a time, starting on the left.
4 ÷ 8 = 0, remainder 4. Carry 4 to the next digit. 4 carried over with 8 makes 48. 48 ÷ 8 = 6. 7 ÷ 8 = 0, remainder 7. Carry 7 to the next digit. 7 carried over with 2 makes 72. 72 ÷ 8 = 9.
There is nothing left over, so 4,872 ÷ 8 = 609. Check by multiplying: 609 × 8 = 4,872.
Answer: 609
Top tips Write out the times table for the divisor first if it helps. Each remainder becomes a small carried digit in front of the next digit. Check with the inverse: multiply the answer by the divisor.
Watch out for Putting a carried digit in the wrong place. Leaving out a 0 in the answer when a digit cannot be divided.
