Year 4 · SATs preparation
Year 4 generated SATs-style questions
Make a full SATs-style test paper (Arithmetic Paper 1, Reasoning Paper 2 or Reasoning Paper 3) in one click, or tick topics to make a quick question sheet. You get brand-new questions in the style of the key stage 2 maths tests, with diagrams, answer boxes and a mark scheme, as editable Word files. These are not real test questions: they are written for this site. Every question only uses skills taught in Year 4 or earlier, with numbers to match, and you can choose a short paper, a half paper or a full one.
Full SATs-style test papers
One click makes a whole paper in the layout of the real test: cover page, instructions, boxed questions and a mark scheme, as editable Word files. Each paper follows the order and mix of topics of a real 2022 to 2025 test, but only with topics and question styles taught by Year 4: where the real question is on a Year 6 topic, a Year 4 topic takes its place. Choose a short paper (10 marks) for a quick check, a half paper (20 marks for arithmetic, 18 for reasoning) or a full paper (40 and 35 marks, the length of the real tests). Year 4 reasoning has 1-mark and 2-mark questions, so a paper has more questions than the real one.
The skills row applies to the papers and to the quick question sheet below. Untick the earlier years to practise only this year's new skills.

About these questions
Every question here is written by this website, in the style of the key stage 2 maths tests (Paper 1 arithmetic, and Papers 2 and 3 reasoning). We studied the layout, wording and kinds of question in the 2000 to 2025 tests, then wrote our own, with new numbers and diagrams drawn for each sheet. They are not real test questions and they are not copied from any test. For the real ones, see SATs past questions, which uses the same topic names.
Every answer is worked out by the computer from the numbers in the question, and a separate program re-checks them. Two-mark questions have a working box, and the answer file gives the marking guidance. Calculators are not needed.
Questions teachers ask
How do the test papers work?
Press one of the three paper buttons. Each paper copies the shape of a real test from 2022 to 2025: the same number of questions, the same topics in the same order and the same marks for each question (including the 2-mark and 3-mark questions), so Arithmetic Paper 1 starts with easy calculations and ends with long division, and the reasoning papers start with short questions and finish with multi-step problems. Every question is newly written by this site with new numbers. The paper downloads with a cover page, an instructions page, the boxed question pages and an end-of-test page, plus a separate mark scheme. Use the quick question sheet instead when you want a condensed page for homework or a short task.
Are these real SATs questions?
No. They are new questions written for this website in the style of the key stage 2 maths tests. If you want the real questions from the 2016 to 2025 papers, use SATs past questions.
Can I edit the questions?
Yes. The practice sheet and the answer sheet download as Word files, so you can change wording, delete a question or add your own. The diagrams are pictures you can resize or replace.
How are the answers checked?
The answers are worked out by the computer from the numbers in each question, then every question style is re-checked by a second, separate program, including the properties of drawn shapes such as parallel sides, right angles and lines of symmetry.
Why only some topics?
The key stage 2 tests are sat at the end of Year 6, but they use maths from every year of the key stage. For Year 4 this page only offers question styles on skills taught by Year 4, with numbers to match (for example Year 3 stays within 1,000 and does not use decimals). Topics such as ratio, algebra, percentages of amounts, long division and the mean are not taught until Year 6, so they are not here; they are on the Year 6 page. The question styles have not been reviewed by a teacher, so look through a sheet before you give it out.
