Year 3 Shape worksheets

Year 3 Shape is taught in the Summer term, weeks 8 to 9. This block has 10 steps: Turns and angles; Right angles; Compare angles; Measure and draw lines accurately; Horizontal and vertical; Parallel and perpendicular; Recognise and describe 2-D shapes; Draw polygons; Recognise and describe 3-D shapes; Make 3-D shapes.

Steps in this block

Step 1: Turns and angles

Describe quarter, half, three-quarter and full turns, clockwise and anticlockwise, and use them to say which way someone faces.

Step 1 · not scaffolded sheet with answers

Step 2: Right angles

Find right angles in shapes and pictures, and compare angles with a right angle: less than, equal to or greater than.

Step 2 · not scaffolded sheet with answers

Step 3: Compare angles

Compare angles with a right angle and with each other, find the greatest and the smallest, and put angles in order of size.

Step 3 · not scaffolded sheet with answers

Step 4: Measure and draw lines accurately

Measure lines with a ruler in centimetres and millimetres, draw lines of a given length and spot mistakes in measuring.

Step 4 · not scaffolded sheet with answers

Step 5: Horizontal and vertical

Recognise horizontal and vertical lines, and lines that are neither.

Step 5 · not scaffolded sheet with answers

Step 6: Parallel and perpendicular

Recognise parallel lines (always the same distance apart) and perpendicular lines (meeting at a right angle).

Step 6 · not scaffolded sheet with answers

Step 7: Recognise and describe 2-D shapes

Name flat shapes, count their sides, vertices and right angles, and use descriptions to name them.

Step 7 · not scaffolded sheet with answers

Step 8: Draw polygons

Complete squares and rectangles on a dot grid by finding the missing corner, and name polygons by their sides.

Step 8 · not scaffolded sheet with answers

Step 9: Recognise and describe 3-D shapes

Name 3-D shapes such as cubes, cuboids, pyramids, cylinders, cones and spheres and count their faces, edges and vertices.

Step 9 · not scaffolded sheet with answers

Step 10: Make 3-D shapes

Make 3-D shapes from cubes, count the cubes in a shape, and count the straws and marshmallows needed for the edges and vertices of a cube.

Step 10 · not scaffolded sheet with answers

How to use this block

Work through the steps in order. For each step, start the class on the Expected sheet and give Developing or Greater depth sheets where needed. Every worksheet has a separate answer sheet, so children can mark their own work or you can mark it with a marks column. Use the Make a sheet page, or the teacher guide, if you want to know more.
